After hyperglycemia, hypertension and hyperlipidemia, hyperuricemia and gout has become another major metabolism-related disease that has serious impact on resident’s health. April 20 every year has been designated as “Gout Day with concern Universal”, and the theme of this year is “Out of misunderstanding, and returning to science”.
The day of April 20 was selected because of its special meaning: the figure 420 happens to be the critical value for the diagnosis of hyperuricemia 420umol/L. The annual 420 is intended to raise the publics’ scientific understanding of gout through its popular science and promotion, that is, besides tons of patients attacked by gout, there are more people with asymptomatic hyperuricemia, and active health management and clinical interventions are required even when there is no symptom present. Gout is more prevalent than you think, and it may happen to everyone.
As the morbidity of gout and hyperuricemia keeps rising every year, KRRP has been committed to concerning and raising the publics’ awareness and understanding of gout and hyperuricemia, to help patients get standardized treatment and management. With the upcoming of this year’s “420”, KRRP together with the Severe Metabolic Disease Branch of the China National Health Association and the First People’s Hospital of Kunshan jointly initiate the “Yangtai Summit & the Program of Medical Partnership Clinical Training Center for Gout the Grass-Roots Chronic Disease”. The Program initiating meeting was held at the First People’s Hospital of Kunshan on April 16. The event has been reported by nearly a hundred mainstream media including the People’s Daily.
At the event, Zhong Kai, Deputy Secretary of the China National Health Association, Professor Mei Changlin from Shanghai Changzheng Hospital and Chairman of the Severe Metabolic Disease Branch of the China National Health Association, Professor Zou Hejian, member of Advisory Committee of the Severe Metabolic Disease Branch of the China National Health Association and Party Secretary of Shanghai Huashan Hospital, and Zhou Kaiyun, President of the First People’s Hospital of Kunshan and other participants attended the meeting.

“Health is not only the fundamental of everyone to a happy life and the basis for prosperity of every family, but also integral to our efforts to build China into a modern socialist country and to advance the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation on all fronts.” Deputy Secretary Zhong Kai stated in the address, in recent years, hyperuricemia and gout has become a common chronic disease, meanwhile, the building of hierarchical medical system is turning grass-root doctors into the “main force” for diagnosis, treatment and management of patients with hyperuricemia and gout.
He presented that China National Health Association has insisted to its founding purpose of the Chinese nation, people’s well-being and people’s health, thoroughly followed the direction to “boom national health, revitalize national medicine and advance national health”. The establishment of the training center is intended to create medical treatment partnerships between grass-roots medical institutions and tertiary hospitals for treatment of chronic diseases and establish systemic training curriculum, to provide better diagnosis and treatment for patients at grass-roots and advance the people’s living and treatment.
President Zhou Kaiyun presented her thoughts in her speech that grass-root hospital is the medical institution that contact the most with patients and can better solve patients’ actual cause of disease, thus, grass-root hospitals need to better understand the diagnosis and treatment for typical patients with gout. At the lighting ceremony of the Program of Medical Partnership Clinical Training Center for Gout the Grass-Roots Chronic Disease, Zhong Kai, Zou Hejian, Zhou Kaiyun, Peng Ai, Li Lin from Zhangzheng Hospital, and etc. jointly go up onto the stage to announce the official initiation of the program.
At the launching meeting, Deputy Secretary Zhong Kai award boards to the first batch of model units such as Shanghai Huashan Hospital, Changzheng Hospital, and Tenth Hospital of Tongji University. Peng Ai, Director of the Gout Center of Tenth Hospital of Tongji University, and Liu Lei from the People’s First Hospital of Kunshan as representatives of the model centers respectively gave a speech.
At the kickoff meeting, Deputy Secretary General Zhong Kai awarded the first batch of demonstration units, including Shanghai Huashan Hospital, Changzheng Hospital, and Tongji University's 10th People's Hospital.
Peng Ai, the director of the Gout Center of the 10th People's Hospital Affiliated to Tongji University, gave speeches as a representative of the demonstration center, and Liu Lei, the first People's Hospital of Kunshan City, gave speeches as a representative of the grassroots hospital.
To improve scientific awareness of hyperuricemia & gout of grass-roots clinical medical workers, make more patients know about scientific knowledge of hyperuricemia & gout, in order to properly face up to and implement scientific diagnosis and treatment approach, to help patients have a healthier life quality, Zou Hejian, Party Secretary of Shanghai Huashan Hospital donated books to nearly 10 representative hospitals that attended the meeting.
At the session of forum, Zhu Xiaoxia, Associate Chief Physician from Shanghai Huashan Hospital, Peng Ai, Director of the Gout Center of Tenth Hospital of Tongji University, Lin Huandong, Chief Physician from the Department of Endocrinology, Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University, Salemati Sali, hief Physician from the Department of Cardiology, Zhongshan Hospital, made keynote speeches themed “Specification and Progress of Anti-inflammatory Treatment for Gout”, “Knowledge of Uric-acid Nephropathy”, “Hyperuricemia and Chronic Metabolic Disease”, and “Cardiovascular Risk of Hyperuricemia and its Management Progress” respectively.
In the same afternoon, experts in various related areas from all over China conducted ‘420 Gout & Hyperuricemia Day’ free consultation, as well as learning exchange of “Training on Standardized Diagnosis and Treatment”, aimed to promote awareness of hyperuricemia and gout among grass-roots doctors and the public, actively carry out intervention and disease management of a long term healthy life style, help patients control the conditions during the whole course, lose weight in a scientific way, and decrease the incidence and development of the disease.
